I write this from my shiny new iMac. Thoughts so far:

Everyone has been so kind – I feel sort of like those Verizon commercials with the network following people around. I asked questions out into the ether and answers came back nearly instantaneously. I was alone in the house, but totally didn’t feel it. Thank you – so much – to all of you who answered via Twitter and IM and email. It was so very helpful and I’m sure I’ll have more questions as I go on. Yesterday was such a terrific warm and fuzzy day.

The boys’ reactions were a fascinating case study in marketing and branding. I guess they really didn’t know I was getting a new computer, and I don’t get the sense they have a big understanding of ‘platform’ – to them, a computer is a computer. So this was all a surprise. Jack came up and oohed and ahhed over the new machine yesterday and said, “It looks like an iDevice!” I asked what he meant, and he said it’s like iPhone and iPod. I asked who makes ‘iDevices’ – he didn’t know. But he sure as heck knows what one looks like, and that they’re desirable and cool. Or sick. Or whatever the kids are saying these days.

Annoyed at various Finder interfaces, although from the looks of the <strike>Leopard</strike> Lolcat preview, a lot of that will change. I like the folder icons in Windows that show little thumbnails of what’s inside. I don’t see that over here. Also can’t figure out how to default to list view in folders.

I like the toys – well, really that seems cruel to say. I think GarageBand qualifies as a toy. Maybe not so much with iPhoto. I like that interface very much and while I don’t think I’ll use it for my work images, it seems great for family and personal photos. Really great.

I can print from some applications, like TextEdit, but not from Firefox. That seems weird. I get some kind of ‘bad client request error’. Keith says he doesn’t know how to fix it.

But on the whole, it seems like it’s going ok. There’s lots to learn, and that feels pretty daunting. But it’s a pretty machine and I’m sure I’ll get to be a power user like all the cool kids someday.
