realm of the sub-genius
October 30, 2007I went in to the Apple Store this afternoon to take advantage of my new One-to-One training membership for the first time. I had been collecting questions on a sticky note all week.
It went okay - I stumped the poor guy a number of times. Turns out he was ‘just’ a Creative, not a Genius. I got a bunch of good tips and information, though.
- We had fun with two iMacs in one room both responding to any remote. In Tiger, you can turn off remote control - all or nothing - but in Leopard (at least there in the store, anyway) it appears that you can pair a device with a particular remote. Woo!
- The help in Leopard looks pretty cool. Don’t know what it looked like before, though.
- Command and the 1, 2, 3 (and 4 in Leopard) keys toggle through folder views. You can make folder views stick (sort of) under ‘View Options.’
- I learned how to set default applications for file types (command-i, set Open With and say yes to the ‘all’ option) [Had to bring in the mythical Australian for that answer.]
I’ve set up another appointment, not next week but the following. Think someone there can show me AppleScript stuff?

Sounds like a fruitful trip :) As for AppleScript… we can talk later about the “joys” of AppleScript.
You can pair remotes to iMacs in 10.4: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302545
As an aside, I hate the big cat names, I don’t know what the new one is, what the old one is and what the really old one is. Tiger and Leopard and Panther and Jaguar and… how am I supposed to suss out which is the latest? Does Panther beat Jaguar?
