no monkeys here

tai chi

We’ve been working on repulse monkey in class. I used to hate repulse monkey. I like it now - it used to feel like dance or something froofy, but now I’ve had a chance to work through where the power is, where the intention is, and it feels completely different.

Today I was trying to pay attention to the arm part of the movement, as that’s where the last of the ‘dance’ feeling resides. The beginning of the movement has a lot of intention in the arms, but the whole opening up and ‘ta-da’ part of the end has bothered me for some time. Edward demonstrated for me and I got some insight - there’s more of a twisting open into that nice arms-rounded kind of pose than there is a spread out ‘ta-da’ thing. I’m sure I’m making no sense here, but it made sense this morning in class.

And as I haven’t seen a monkey in days, it must be working on some level.

  1. Like you, initially I was not a big fan of repulse monkey, but the more I do it, the more I enjoy it. I really like the openess and flow the the movement :)

speed racer

Forget the old cartoon, forget any hint of serious intent and go watch this movie for the sheer technicolor delight of it. It's beautiful, it's fast, it's silly (in the good way), it's exciting and inspired. Go Speed go!
