murder, mirth & marriage
May 29, 2007Oooh! Oooh! So excited! Keith and I are going to sponsor a film in the Michigan Theater’s Summer Classic Film Series in July, which means I’ll have freebie tickets to hand out to you, my adoring fans. Well, you don’t have to adore me, we’ll still get you a ticket if you want one.
Mostly I’m excited for the movie itself - it’s one of my absolute favs: The Thin Man, 1934, starring William Powell & Myrna Loy, nominated for 4 Oscars, including Best Picture. Keith & I hold Nick & Nora as the ultimate marital role models. (Keith points out that I am sorely lacking in the ‘heiress’ department, but we do our best.) It’s ostensibly a detective movie, but we love it for the witty one-liners.
If you’ve not seen The Thin Man, or any of its many sequels, here’s a nice description of what to expect from filmsite.org (some spoilers in the full article, but not this quote):
The film’s mystery story takes a back seat to the romantic screwball comedy, featuring the splendid, snappy banter between the rich, carefree married couple. They are known for sleuthing, solving murders, wisecracking one-liners, affectionate witticisms, delightful teasing and one-upmanship, alcoholic fun with plenty of martinis, a wire-haired terrier named Asta (actually named Skippy), and a loving relationship - often punctuated with quick kisses and slight hiccups.
More info on tickets later, but for now, mark the date(s) on your calendar: Sunday, July 1 at 3:00 and Tuesday, July 3 at 7:00.

“I read he was shot in the tabloids.”
“In the tabloids? That must’ve hurt!”
And now, cos I won’t be in Ann Arbor until September and so can’t make your showing, I’ve had to go an order a copy of The Thin Man on Amazon. D@mn you. It has better be good; it’s cost me £4.63.
