Markos was in town last night, on a
book tour. I went down to hear him talk, but I was a bit late and had to stand at the back. At one point, he mentioned a local city council race where a challenger had beat the incumbent. That's Ron!
Drinking Liberally organized a get together at
Leopold's afterwards (man oh man, their
gin is the best thing ever), and it was great to see lots of new faces at DL and get to talk to Markos as well.
The main thrust of what Markos was trying to get across was that campaigning on issues doesn't work. Telling a story, creating a narrative ...

The Rude Pundit is not for everyone. I think he's deliciously, wickedly funny and insightful, but his language is not for the faint of heart. That said,
yesterday's post nailed it. Spot on. Here is the Rude One's take on what the Democrats need to be saying, over and over and over (ok, maybe without the swear words, but you get the drift):
Democrats need to counter that message not by saying that they'll be better parents - that they won't fuck the neighbors or they won't blow the bank account on high-quality smack. No, instead, they need to offer a message that appeals to the American desire to have the guts to stand up to bullies big and ...

9:47: I'm at the right room for the Bloggers Caucus, but the room isn't open. Security insists that the room isn't supposed to open til 4:00pm, even though there's a sign posted at the door saying that the Blogger's Caucus convenese at 10:00am. Not an auspicious beginning.
Someone has said Granholm was supposed to be here at 9:45. Don't see her. But I've got a sticker on. Ooh - here come some more cute young wonks in suits. That's the best part of this so far.
9:58: Room's open. About 25 people here so far. Laura Packard is in charge. Haven't seen Ron yet.
10:08 Stabenow is here!
10:10: She's still talking - wants ...

Ron's untiring attitude and incredible desire to connect with people seems to have won him a spot on
City Council. Sure, people congratulated me, too, and there seems to be a mad dash for my 'collectible' yard signs, but Ron is the real winner here. What a trooper. You deserve this, my friend. Good work, and I know you will keep working hard now that you've earned a seat on council. Congratulations, Ron.

I guess that's it. I've designed and spray-painted my little heart out. I've dropped the lit, I've delivered the polling place signs. It's up to the voters now. Go Ron, go!

I suspect that many of you who read my little blog have already heard or been invited, but if not, I would like to invite you along for an event this evening to meet and talk to
Ron Suarez, candidate for Ann Arbor City Council in the First Ward.
Catherine Hayes and Carrie Hensel, the talented women behind
Inner Circle Media, have graciously offered us use of their gorgeous new space for this event. So join us from 5:30 - 8:00 pm at 150 S. Fifth, Suite 205 for appetizers and drinks and good conversation with interesting people. Ron will be spinning jazzy downtempo for your listening enjoyment as well.
We're asking for donations to cover the food & drink, ...

Campaign Manager. Yup, for real and everything.
Ron Suarez, progressive Democrat for the City Council (First Ward) had taken me on as his campaign manager. I'm psyched. Got the button maker out and everything.

I'm not sure how new or old this little clip is, but it's clever and puts the Federal budget into an understandable perspective. It's from Ben Cohen, one of the founders of Ben & Jerry's.

The corporation-loving, citizen-hating Bush administration commits yet another atrocity: it's selling precious public assets, paid for by the American people, to the highest corporate bidder.
The Smithsonian Institute - which includes the National Zoo and the National Gallery of Art, as well as the natural history museums - has entered into an exclusive deal with Showtime. Under this deal, any filmmaker who wants to use the Smithsonian's materials in their film or program must offer Showtime the first right of refusal on their project. That is to say, a filmmaker must offer to sell their project to Showtime, whether they want to or not, in order to have access to the Smithsonian archives.
Needless to say, filmmakers are outraged at ...
