These are my links for November 6th through November 8th:

  • The latest research on the correlation between religion and niceness. – By Paul Bloom – Slate Magazine – "The Danes and the Swedes, despite being godless, have strong communities. In fact, Zuckerman points out that most Danes and Swedes identify themselves as Christian. They get married in church, have their babies baptized, give some of their income to the church, and feel attached to their religious community—they just don't believe in God. Zuckerman suggests that Scandinavian Christians are a lot like American Jews, who are also highly secularized in belief and practice, have strong communal feelings, and tend to be well-behaved."

"The sorry state of American atheists, then, may have nothing to do with their lack of religious belief. It may instead be the result of their outsider status within a highly religious country where many of their fellow citizens, including very vocal ones like Schlessinger, find them immoral and unpatriotic. Religion may not poison everything, but it deserves part of the blame for this one."

  1. Hey, I’m an American Jew and I’m not well behaved! (Just kidding :))
I have met some freaking miserable atheists. The last two self-identified atheists that I met both tried to cram it down my throat and were actually kinda mean about it. I felt almost like they were people on the far right who try to tell me that you can only go to Heaven if you have JC as your savior. (Well, I guess that lets me out, then!)
But what you quoted does kinda make sense…if you hear religion over and over and over again and you honestly don’t believe (as opposed to folks who I think are just bitter and want to blame God by not believing in Him/Her/It), I can see becoming kinda mean. Maybe. I don’t know.
