delicious These are my links for October 27th through October 28th: The Power of Passive Campaigning - Stanley Fish Blog - NYTimes.com - "What he [Obama] (or his campaign) doesn’t do is bring up the Keating Five, or make veiled references to McCain’s treatment of his first wife, or make fun of Sarah Palin (she doesn’t need any help), or disparage his opponent’s experience, or hint at the disabilities of age. He just stands there looking languid (George Will called him the Fred Astaire of politics), always smiling and never raising his voice." Container Condo To Be Built In Detroit : TreeHugger - How on earth are they going to insulate those puppies? Keeping them cool in Florida or warm in ...

How does anything digital get a patina, for that matter? Do bytes fall out? Chips in the CSS? Dirt worn into the cracks of the program? Ariane Sherine: All aboard the Atheist Bus Campaign | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk - Another item from the 'Christianity Relies on Fear to Perpetuate Itself" file: "There's no doubt that advertising can be effective, and religious advertising works particularly well on those who are vulnerable, frightening them into believing. Religious organisations' jobs are made easier because there's no publicly visible counter-view to refute their threats of eternal damnation." Blogging For ...

ann arborfamilyweb, tech & gadgets I bought a new laptop this week - one of the new 13" MacBooks. It's very pretty and I'm enjoying it very much. My HP laptop died a month or two ago, so I'd been waiting on tenterhooks for the announcement of these new Mac laptops. I tried to go get one the day after the announcement, but the Briarwood store was useless and didn't have any. But my dear friends wouldn't let me be deterred and we went out to Novi on Wednesday afternoon. They had them there - yay - and now I have one. It was an interesting sight at the store - one after another after another new laptops walking out the door. I made an apple ...

The Rude Pundit - (As always with the Rude One, there is some naughty language in this post. But I love it anyway.) "Obama's approach to the whole campaign has been incredibly straightforward: He is not running to be your buddy, Americans. He is running to be your president." Electoral-vote.com: President, Senate, House Updated Daily - Interesting theory: "The consequence of this whole campaign could be far reaching. If Obama wins and the exit polls show independents voted overwhelmingly for him, the pundits are going to lay the blame at Palin's high ...

pie in the sky

ann arborfamily We have a big ancient apple tree in our front yard. Mostly, it's the source of consternation: apples have to be picked up before they rot and before the grass can be cut. We don't spray or otherwise tend to the fruit, so we haven't ever really tried to eat them. But as you can see, they're pretty decent looking, albeit with some insect blemishes. So this year we tried to collect some for eating. Now, from this picture, you might suppose we could just reach up and grab them. But the apples in the picture are really high up - about level with the second story dormer. We ...

delicious These are my links for October 7th through October 13th: 3quarksdaily - Great essay on the religious right, Pascal's wager, communism, bolshevism, etc. "Pascal had supposed that the persuasiveness of his argument to any rational thinker would result in submission to the long-standing authority of the Catholic church. But the problem is that the argument is no more, and no less, compelling coming from a 17th-century Catholic philosopher defending traditional faith than coming from a couple of rough and unwashed rednecks in Louisiana in defense of a strain of enthusiastic neo-Protestantism that Pascal himself would have deemed diabolical." Hullabaloo - When desperation starts hurting America: McCain's campaign "But even knowing that his candidacy was always very likely doomed is not stopping ...
