I went in to the Apple Store this afternoon to take advantage of my new One-to-One training membership for the first time. I had been collecting questions on a sticky note all week.
It went okay - I stumped the poor guy a number of times. Turns out he was 'just' a Creative, not a Genius. I got a bunch of good tips and information, though.
We had fun with two iMacs in one room both responding to any remote. In Tiger, you can turn off remote control - all or nothing - but in Leopard (at least there in the store, anyway) it appears that you can pair a device with a particular remote. Woo!
The help in Leopard looks pretty cool. ...

I write this from my shiny new iMac. Thoughts so far:
Everyone has been so kind - I feel sort of like those Verizon commercials with the network following people around. I asked questions out into the ether and answers came back nearly instantaneously. I was alone in the house, but totally didn't feel it. Thank you - so much - to all of you who answered via Twitter and IM and email. It was so very helpful and I'm sure I'll have more questions as I go on. Yesterday was such a terrific warm and fuzzy day.
The boys' reactions were a fascinating case study in marketing and branding. I guess they really didn't know I was getting a new ...

Ed links to a post on Seth Godin's blog.
Seth has this to say about not re-inventing the wheel when it comes to web design:
I'm going to go out on a limb and beg you not to create an original design. There are more than a billion pages on the web. Surely there's one that you can start with? If your organization can't find a website that you all agree can serve as a model, you need to stop right now and find a new job.
Not a site to rip-off, but an inspiration. Fonts and colors and layout. The line spacing. The interactions. Why not? Your car isn't unique, and your house might not be either. If you've ...

At least I think it's complete. Moving to
WordPress 2.3 was an interesting upgrade. There were a couple plugins I
had to find workarounds for, because they are an integral part of my design but no longer work in this version. The biggest change was having to hand-code the category icon display, but it wasn't that bad and I do like the fact that it now shows icons for all categories. And thank heavens for
WordPress Automatic Upgrade Plugin. That has made my life so much easier, in so many ways.
Simple Tagging was made redundant by the now baked-in WP tagging. Not hard to change that, except that I have no way to import the old tags. ...

Lincoln's death chair, Kennedy's death car, Fuller's aluminum house and other random artifacts from a crazy rich man's attic. Interesting but outright weird.

When my PC died a while back, there was a moment - nay, several of them all strung together, even - when I was really excited about switching to the Mac platform. It's pretty, it's sexy, all my friends are on it, etc. etc. etc. However, I am just not excited about it at all anymore. For example, now that I've seen how crappy the 20" displays are, I've had to change my plan from a dual 20" monitor setup to a single 24" setup. It's a big, lovely screen, to be sure, but it's only 65% the screen real estate I was looking forward to. And now that I'm trying to get my ducks in a row ...
