swfir

ravesweb, tech & gadgets Word is out all across the web design RSS feeds this morning: Dan Mall and crew have introduced swfIR, a method of styling images with Flash. It means that you can add borders, rounded corners, drop shadows - even rotate the image - on the fly. Which is a boon for CMS based sites, because designers can now add some slickness to image display without the content generators needing to be skilled in image manipulation. Dan wrote more on the concept at A List Apart today, too. The whole concept, not to mention the simple implementation, ...

disturbances

web, tech & gadgets I'm messing around with my site. I'm moving things, changing platforms (sort of - moving to WPMU), and there may be a few whacked out things going on. Hope to have everything up and pretty and new and shiny in a week or so.

2.7 seconds of fame

web, tech & gadgets I was quoted today. On the internets and everything. When does the money start rolling in? (bwa ha ha) Keeping your neck warm is also key to feeling comfy all over, so bundle up with an Organic Cable Scarf from Gaiam. And, says mitten, the 'organic cotton scarves in gorgeous cable knit patterns can help you feel warm, feel good and do a little something for the planet.'

show us your shorts

ann arborarts Do you feel in the dark when they announce the Oscar winners for short films? Do you wish that Hollywood would show some lovin' to the Flyover Zone once in a while? Well, here it is: the Michigan is showing all the Oscar-nominated shorts on Saturday, February 24 starting at 1:30. The first program will be the live shorts, the second will be the animated shorts. If you come for the live shorts, you can stay to see the animated shorts for free. And if you're really, really into the Oscars, there's still time to get tickets for Oscar Night America on Sunday. It's a charity benefit and they are pulling out all ...

familyintrospection I'm not much for Valentine's Day. It's always been a competition between that and my birthday, just a week apart. Our bank account and my sensibilities generally keep me from wanting to splurge on anything, as I probably splurged the week before. So I generally ignore the holiday wholesale. Which, of course, would be fine and well and good if it weren't for the fact that there are other people in the world who don't ignore the holiday, and in fact, feel hurt if it goes by without fanfare. Luckily for me and my orientation, most of those people are women. The men I've dallied with, had crushes on and enjoyed various other states ...

time transfixed

ann arborintrospection As of early yesterday morning, I am forty-one. Well then. That was anti-climactic, eh? But I have had such a string of nice days, and the little birthday glow one gets seems to still be going. Tuesday night, Keith's InZero directorial debut screened out at the Main Theater, under the auspices of the Mitten Movie Project (no relation, if you can believe it). I normally am not all that excited to go to these events - especially the ones with after-parties - not because I don't enjoy seeing Keith's films (in fact, that's why I go at all - I do enjoy them) but because he's such a social ...

school or no school

family NO SCHOOL! Let's get a report on conditions from our familial meteorologist: Well, Merv, conditions are looking good for another day in front of the tv in pajamas which will proceed pleasantly until about 9:30 8:45 when the first accusation of 'that's unfair!' will be released. Scattered outbreaks of 'you're a butthead' and smacks upside the head will continue through midday. Conditions are expected to worsen by mid-afternoon, when brotherly relations will have degenerated into frequent acts of violence and name-calling. Visitors should exercise caution, as parents may become slippery, irritable and one step closer to insanity.

at least

familyrants At least we were home to hear the pipe go thump as it burst. And see the water cascading out of places it shouldn't. And get to the shutoff valves. At least it was upstairs, and we can shut off water to just that part of the house. At least it happened behind the shower enclosure, which doesn't have drywall, or thank heavens, tile. At least insurance will cover some of it, sort of. At least we still have the ceiling paint.

i’m a pc

web, tech & gadgets I don't have anything in particular against Macs; they do a lot of stuff really well and are very pretty. But after sitting across the desk from a Mac user for a couple years now and experiencing all the system-upgrade-induced-Tourette's and spinning pinwheel of death drinking games, I find those I'm a Mac, I'm a PC ads more than a little smug and disingenuous. These are better. [gv data="N0gRgls2eYc"][/gv] [gv data="L_vV5mZ8Ox8"][/gv] There are two more spoofs by biftar here. Very funny.

speed racer

Forget the old cartoon, forget any hint of serious intent and go watch this movie for the sheer technicolor delight of it. It's beautiful, it's fast, it's silly (in the good way), it's exciting and inspired. Go Speed go!
