beloved

familyraves I was reading some blogs on the NaBloPoMo rotation today, the last day of the month, and one of them had a post that listed the poster's favorite things about someone in their life. So here goes: I really like Keith's handwriting. His printing is good, too. Keith does the dishes really well, usually without complaining, even. He's really motivated on the whole filmmaking front. It's inspiring. I like the way he makes cheese sandwiches. He puts brown sauce on them, so I don't want to eat them, but I like the way he does it. I like that he wears black. And boots. He makes me toast and tea. Usually without me asking, even. He makes me giggle. Even ...

not ready for primetime

rantsweb, tech & gadgets I finally gave up on iTunes for video podcasts. I have been unable to make subscribing to video podcasts work satisfactorily. Ok, I haven't been able to make it work much at all. And a day without zefrank is just more than I'm willing to bear! It was downloading the podcast files fine, but when I would click on an item to play it, the lag time was completely unbearable. I'm talking 10 or 15 seconds. And forget switching from one item to another - to get it to realize I wanted to play a new item, not the one that was currently highlighted, I had to go to the music library, select a track ...

inzero, up close and personal

family The boys are not here on this Monday, as they usually are. So I tagged along with Keith to go to the InZero production meeting tonight. Their setup is in Detroit, which is always a bit of a system shock coming from Ann Arbor, but even moreso after just having been in Chicago. But the people all seem good and team oriented and I can see why the project is doing as well as it is. We met afterwards for drinks at The Bronx, a little neighborhood place with a healthy measure of the charming toughness that Detroit seems to embody. I did a fine amount of chatting myself, but it is fun to watch Keith in ...

cocktails at five

p u i Oh, we have the best friends, who invite us for cocktails at five.  Having had all these old movies on in the background while I've been working this weekend, I simply had to wear heels.  And pearls, too. Jack Kerouac and his groupies were there, of course, and I being one of his groupies, was in proper attendance.  But the hostess, Lisa, oh, she has such wonderful art and people in her house - it's like she belongs in a Gladwell book. But there is the skinny - Jack is off to NoCal with the new girl, and we will be sad to see him go.  Happy for his own fortunes, but sad for our own.  I know he'll write, unlike those ...

you are bound to find yourself on unimproved roads

arts We're sitting here watching tv. It's a special about the making of Star Wars, with lots of back stage footage and insights into the production of the film. Keith is enjoying it, as a student enjoys learning from a master. So, with that in mind, I am thinking back to Friday afternoon and our tour through the Charles Sheeler exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago. Sheeler was a painter and photographer who was active from the teens through the fifties, and a pillar in the American artistic movement called Precisionism. Precisionist artists dealt with the changing landscape of urban and industrial America, looking at the lines and details making up their new ...

road trip

travel 4 hours from Chicago to Ann Arbor. I'm wiped. So, no bottle blogging today. What a nice day, though. We did a bit of filming and strolled along the lakeside, then a trip to the Art Institute. I'll write more about that, but if you're in Chicago or planning to go before the end of the year, don't miss the Charles Sheeler exhibit. Excellent. One note: wandering through the cubist galleries today, Keith pulls my arm and says "Look - the eye follows you!" Ah ha ha ha ha ha!

t-day

family 9:28am and it looks like a gorgeous day. Mom has just left for choir practice and church. I've got the turkey stuffed and in the oven, but we've determined that we don't have enough chicken broth to complete everything. So Keith and I will be taking a little stroll in the unseasonably warm morning air to pick up some more. 11:19am and Keith is in the shower. Turkey smells great, but we've opened the windows since it's so warm in here. We've already toddled up to the Jewel for chicken stock, and came home with that plus milk, soda and some strawberry ice cream. The table leaf is out and the table cloth on. ...

my kind of town

introspectiontravel Hello from Chicago! Here visiting Mom for the holiday. We spent much of the afternoon walking around downtown, both on our own and as part of the Tiffany on Wednesdays tour at the Chicago Architecture Foundation. We had a beer and a sandwich at some little Italian place and looked at the Christmas windows at Field's Macy's. We didn't get over to the Sheeler exhibit today; will do that Friday. Sitting at lunch, I realized just how content I was to be in the city again. The trains rumbling overhead. The people on the sidewalks - some moving fast, some moving slow. The buses and taxis and their attendant ...

They may be the alma mater, but oh man - what were they thinking spending $4 million dollars for this coach? so they could look like they sent the JV team out?

@jweise It's not a Christmas tree; it means that's the last piece of iron going up on the building. It's tradition. http://bit.ly/Sn5n 3 hrs ago
