The
New York Times is reporting that Christian Science Monitor reporter and Ann Arbor native Jill Carroll has been released by her captors. Terrific news to start the day!

Keith's been podcasting from the Film Festival and had a nice interview with
The Wet Spots, a band from Canada. Listen to it at
his blog - the podcast is in the sidebar, and you can use the 'menu' button to navigate to the March 22 episode if you need to.
The Wet Spots are in town for the festival, as one of their
videos (NSFW) was curated into the show. I had run across it online, showed it to Keith, he loved it and passed it along to the powers that be and it ran in the Out Night show. The band followed up with a live performance at the /aut/ Bar. I ...

I saw the sign being hung this morning. It's a sort of retro-ish affair, vertical, black and white, visually pleasing enough. A
wine bar on Main Street seems like a no-brainer-money-maker. Maybe a little competition will make Cafe Felix shape up a bit - they used to be so nice over there, but the whole place seems to have slid a bit lately.

It's finally here. The
Ann Arbor Film Festival. 6 days of art on the big screen. Well, art may be a stretch, but it will be interesting, whatever it is. I have it on good authority (and not the
usual one, but a real live actual authority this time) that heckling the films is not only allowed, but encouraged.
The vodka sponsor this year is
Level (warning: very pretty but screen-stealing Flash), and if I don't consume too much, or maybe even if I do, I'll moblog what's sure to be a fabulous event tonight.

Me: What should we have for dinner?
Sam: Tuna.
M: Tuna?
S: Yeah, isn't that Irish?

I have on good authority that there may just be a weekly series of films playing this summer and into the fall at the Michigan. And they may be films that have been shown at a certain festival in Utah.
The little birdies think these films may be shown (no guarantees, folks):
Blood Simple
Sex, Lies and Videotape
To Sleep with Anger
Daughters of the Dust
Paris is Burning
Poison
Gas, Food Lodging
Clerks
Hoop Dreams
Crumb
Welcome to the Dollhouse
Gods and Monsters
High Art
Smoke Signals
American Movie
Donnie Darko
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Memento
American Splendor
Maria Full of Grace
Tarnation
More on this later, when schedules are finalized.

and I'll sing it like I mean it.
I subscribe to
emusic and get a lot of good legal music there. I also occasionally buy tracks at the iTunes music store. But tonight, they wouldn't let me. I've been itching for this
track by The Feeling, something we heard in London. It was released a couple weeks ago, and I kept looking for it at iTunes. No luck. Tonight I googled it and found out that it's at the UK iTunes. But when I tried to buy it, it told me that my account wasn't valid in the UK store.
Well then.
More googling turned up
a site where I could buy a legally ...

Go to the Michigan and see
this. Tonight, tomorrow or Thursday night - it moves to the State after that.
It's one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. It's a fantastical thriller set in modern-day Moscow, where the forces of Light and Dark engage in an eternal battle. It's dark, but not oppressive, in fact it's a nice little romp. It's stunning and visually inventive: there's something to be said for movies in which smaller budgets force art directors to actually be creative instead of cgi-ing everything to death. And the subtitles are the absolute best, also done very artistically.
I'm not a huge vampire/fantasy/sci-fan fan, but I really enjoyed this one. ...

Sometime this week, my computer decided it didn't want to talk to my CD or DVD drives. I can't tell you exactly when this happened - sometime since last Thursday, the last time I know I burned a disc. It seemed to be a corrupt driver problem, and after trying the Windows stuff and having no luck, I started up some HP-specific recovery program. I thought the Next button would give me a chance to tell it what I wanted to recover. No such luck. That one mouse click put all my Windows settings back to factory settings.
I did not need this.
I am swamped under as it is this week, running hard just to keep ...
