Pursuant to my last post, Keith is out trying to buy some pseudoephedrine. It's not out on the shelves at the pharmacy anymore! You have to ask for it behind the counter. How dumb.

I've got it. I caught it from Keith. He might have gotten it from Jack. The first cold of the season. So I'm applying palmarosa and sucking down echanecea and zinc. Maybe I'll treat myself with a toddy later. If I can remain vertical long enough, anyway.

You make it sound easy
You say just hold your hand out don't you
You just hold your hand out don't you
That hope never leaves you
'Cos a light shines on that helps you to steer
Makes everything clear
(Well it might)
Well it might in your world
(but it doesn't)
But it doesn't in mine
(I've been stumbling)
I've been stumbling in the dark for years
And the light just made me blind
You say it lights every pathway
Shows me how to live life
For the rest of my days
For the rest of my days
(But I can't)
But I can't put my faith in
(Your words)
Your words and demands
(I believe)
I believe in God alright
It's folk like you I just can't stand
You don't have to try and scare me
To reinforce my faith sir
'Cos I know ...

It's because of the 'education' they're getting.
I'm sitting here looking at Jack's schoolwork. The teacher has given him an F on a paper for having only 7 correct out of 12 questions. However, he actually has 10 correct.
On the sheet, there is an array of dots, 4 columns and 9 rows. It asks for the 'number model' for the given array and Jack has written 4*9 = 36. The teacher has marked this wrong and written 9*4=36 instead. Did she not learn about the
commutative property of multiplication?
The following question asks for the number model for a 5 column, 5 row array and Jack has correctly put in 5*5=25.
The next question asks "Which of ...

Last week, we had some trouble with our host at Martini Republic. At first we thought it was a security problem with our blogging software, but it turned out that wasn't the case. However, in the process, we 'upgraded' the blogging software to its newest version. This rendered it nearly completely unusable, as the new version relies on a WYSIWYG editor that only works on alternate Tuesdays in months without an R.
So.
I spent large parts of last week and this weekend moving Martini Republic to WordPress. You can see the results here:
new improved MR
If you happen to read MR in an rss feed, you'll need to check the url you're using - it has changed.

I've been thinking about Franz Kline lately. How did he do that? How did he make such animated, dimensional space with such limited visual means? Like complex mathematical proofs, where I can follow, but can't recreate them, I can see the pieces he used and I can see the end result, but how he put it together is mysterious and magical.

John Redmond has started up a chapter of
Drinking Liberally here in Ann Arbor. I can personally recommend the meeting - I had a great time tonight. Next one is in two weeks: Sept 15, 8:00-11:00pm at the Arbor Brewing Company. Be there or be square. Ok, that dates me, doesn't it? Well, just come along anyway and have a beer or two with some interesting, progressive-minded people.
